VOTERS APPROVE $185 MILLION IN SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION

Voters recently approved school construction proposals totaling approximately $185 million in nine districts.

Nearly all were eligible for state funding to cover part of the cost.

Bergen County
Cresskill
Planning, design and construction of additional classrooms at Edward H. Bryan School, plus window and roof replacements, technology and security upgrades at various schools.
Total amount: $12,446,400
State funds: $2,906,540

Burlington County
Medford Lakes
Renovations, upgrades and improvements, including security upgrades and acquisition and/or installation of new technology equipment.
Total amount: $2,994,719
State funds: $1,121,075

Mercer County
Hamilton Township
Security system upgrades, health, safety and code-required renovations, and alterations and improvements at 24 schools.
Total amount: $55,393,658
State funds: $22,157,463

Middlesex County
Spotswood 
Safety and security upgrades, HVAC and classroom upgrades, and installation of emergency generators at various schools. The board anticipates using prior bond funds toward its debt service obligations, resulting in no new tax dollars being raised to fund the project.

State funds: $693,762

Monmouth County
Farmingdale 
Security, safety, health and facility upgrades, including school entry security upgrade and renovations, interior and exterior door replacements, roof and window replacement, HVAC and other system replacement with energy-efficient systems, other upgrades.

Holmdel 
Construction of an addition at Holmdel High School and William R. Satz Middle School, including acquisition of land, plus renovation, alterations and improvements at all four district schools.

Renovations, construction and conversions of space at Wildwood Elementary, Briarcliff Middle and Mountain Lakes High School. Includes constructing a new cafeteria at Wildwood, converting rooms to a science classroom and "makerspace" at Briarcliff, renovating cafeteria and auditorium at the high school, and more.

Montville
Three separate proposals covering district-wide renovations and improvements. Proposal 1 must be approved for Proposals 2 and/or 3 to be approved.

Proposal 1
District-wide HVAC renovations, restroom renovations, roof replacement at three schools, and media center renovations at all elementary schools and Lazar Middle School.

PAULSBORO'S WATER AND SEWER SYSTEMS TO GET REPLACED 

State officials have announced new funding to award Paulsboro with rural development funding totaling more than $4.1 million. The funding will be used to replace deteriorating and aging portions of the water and sewer systems along Thomson Avenue in Paulsboro.

PORTAL BRIDGE GROUND BREAKING 

Governor Chris Christie and other key officials have broken ground on the replacement of the Portal Bridge, a two-track 110-year-old swing span structure over the Hackensack River in Kearny and Secaucus, known for malfunctioning and causing delays on the busiest-in-the-nation Northeast Corridor.

The Portal Bridge, built in 1907 and owned by Amtrak, is one of the heaviest trafficked railroad bridges in the Western Hemisphere. NJ TRANSIT carries approximately 150,000 passengers per day on almost 400 trains.

SJI ANNOUNCES ACQUISITION OF ELIZABETHTOWN GAS AND ELKTON GAS FROM SOUTHERN COMPANY GAS

South Jersey Industries is set to become the second largest natural gas supplier in New Jersey.  The firm is acquiring New Jersey-based Elizabethtown Gas and Maryland-based Elkton Gas from Pivotal Utility Holdings, Inc., a subsidiary of Southern Company Gas.

Upon the successful completion of merger, SJI will provide service to more than 675,000 customers. In addition to Elizabethtown Gas' 288,000 customers, the company will also add over 6,000 customers in Maryland as part of the deal.

SJI is acquiring both companies for total consideration of $1.7 billion, with an effective purchase price of $1.4 billion after taking into consideration the present value of tax benefits associated with the transaction.

WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY UNVEILS NEW ACADEMIC BUILDING 
 
William Paterson University unveiled Part 1 of its $31M renovation project.  Preakness Hall, which was partially funded by New Jersey's "Building Our Future" bond act, includes kinesiology laboratories, 14 smart classrooms with 133-inch high-definition projectors, a 90-seat auditorium, a writing center and faculty offices for the Departments of English and Philosophy.

The second phase is expected to be completed by the summer of 2018. 

DONG ENERGY TO BECOME ØRSTED

DONG Energy, which is hoping to build a new wind farm off the New Jersey coast, is changing its name to Ørsted.  Ørsted officials promoting Ocean Wind say the project will involve an offshore wind farm approximately 10 miles offshore and have the capacity to power more than 500,000 homes and businesses in New Jersey.

The two leading candidates in New Jersey's gubernatorial race are both urging support for the "New Jersey for Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief" fund. 

Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and former Ambassador Phil Murphy are calling on New Jersey residents to help the residents of Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.
